Helping Out

Hey. We'd talked about doing something for Haiti, but we didn't have very many creative ideas. Kelsi and I, though, talked about how a lot of students are angry that so much money is headed to Haiti while people in Riverton/Springfield are also in need (Chloe had mentioned this at last week's meeting too). So we talked about maybe choosing a school who had raised money for Haiti and trying to top their dollar amount and then give it to Contact Ministries or the Riverton Food Bank or something.

Ideas?

i totally agree with helping in riverton... i help with the food pantry around all the big holidays and its insane how many families come in that need help. The only problem is that kids usuaslly dont hand out money so its going to a challange to get kids pshyced about it. i would love it. if we did something like the penny war that we did in spanish last year.. im sure it would go over super well
:)

I agree with seth. I'm not sure how much money the "penny War" thing made but I'm guessing around 300 or 400 dollars (maybe more). I'm not saying it wouldn't help anything, I'm just saying what's $400 compared to the Millions already given... Just something to think about. I'm cool with giving it to ministries and the food pantry. I know my church does alot of "mini missions" where we go out and help surrounding communities. So I'm good with anything.

i like the donations to our community and the penny war...but how does it work?

ok... so the penny war works like this....

we would have like a big jar for each grade level... probably in the office... and you want to raise as much money as you possibly can in pennies... the catch is that other grades can put other money (nickles, dimes, quarters, dollar bils) and this takes away from the amount given... all in all you want to have as much money as you can in pennies while other people are trying to make you lose by putting other money in it.:)

I love the idea of helping out in Riverton AND in Haiti. I say we donate money to Haiti, and then do community service projects around Riverton.. Since we can't actually go to Haiti. That way, we're also getting involved with other people in the community.

We should do some type of community service around Riverton. But the penny war is a good idea since it made alot of money in spanish last year

we should help both in any way that we can

I love the penny idea. I think it would work out super great. Its something different that we havent done before, unless you were in spanish. I think a lot more people would participate.

What about donating money to families that have a loved one over seas? Money and resources get tight when a major provider isn't at home. Just a suggestion

i agree , haiti is in need of major help... we all know about this cause its on the news. but then again many people in riverton need just as much help .

i think the penny war is a cool idea, its something besides the average food drive!

The main thing is we need to help someone. It's true people here need help but there is already enough food at our pantries to go out. In Haiti people are living outside under the sky in fear for more crumbling buildings. They have awful water and most of the natural springs have been polluted. I know you guys think that they have enough going but they really don't. they are short thousands of tents for refugees. they really need the help still. but whatever SGA chooses at least we are helping someone.

ok.. so heres our problem with the penny war. We decided (with mr lamkey) that we would put the big filtered water jugs in the front of the office. we would have one per grade level and we figured that they big enough that you would notice if someone was messing with them or trying to take them and the hole in the top is small enough that it would be hard to steal it. the problem is that we only have one at school... we still need 3 more... if anyone happens to get it at home or a parent gets it at work and they could possibly bring one in for us to use that would be great:)

I like the casual Friday idea a lot. I don't know how many teachers would participate, but it could raise some amount of money. Some is better than none...

Okay so the local causes group decided that we want to do one thing that just involves doing stuff for an orginization (for people who don't want to interact), and something where we can actually get involved with the people we are helping. We have one, but does anybody else have any ideas for a cause where we can communicate with others while helping?
